  ABOUT

Bio

Paula works primarily in pastel, oil and water color. She says, “I try to approximate the beauty I see in people and objects in everyday life. It is important to me that the painting has life. My goal is to achieve a sense of movement and clarity in the same space. Portraiture has been a focus. I find the challenge of getting a likeness, and even more so an expression, very exciting.”

Paula didn’t question that she was an artist until she’d dropped out of art school three times. Abstract expressionism dominated the art world in the early seventies, and the work she was interested in doing was not valued in the educational environment she found herself in. Coupled with that, frustration, politics and an adjustment to adulthood sent her on an alternate path in search of a livelihood. Her art career was temporarily abandoned until she could organize her life in a way that would enable her to paint for herself. A nursing degree, marriage and three children decades later happened before she joined an adolescent and adult art class with her daughter. She also became involved with a local group of women artists.

Paula has been studying with Jeff Webb, a pastel master, for about five years. She has been in several shows in Long Island and Manhattan. Among other awards for her work, she has won the prestigious Diana Burnhardt Gold Medal award at the Pastel Society of America.

She is an associate member of the “Pastel Society of America”, and a member of the “Long Beach Art League”.
